Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is the Scottish Government’s national strategy for strengthening links between businesses and education with the headline aim of reducing youth unemployment by 40% by 2021. The strategy is delivered by employer led regional groups across Scotland and Glasgow was the first DYW Group to launch back in 2014.

Glasgow has a strong track record for putting employers at the heart of the employment and skills agenda. Led by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Developing the Young Workforce Glasgow builds on the recommendations of the Youth Employment Action Group and findings from the Commission for Developing the Young Workforce, with the key focuses being on strengthening industry engagement with education and increasing employment opportunities for young people in the city. The team has built a foundation of best practice to support the aims of the DYW agenda.

Working with businesses across the city, DYW Glasgow has established strategic partnerships between Glasgow’s schools and leading organisations such as the BBC, Vodafone and Glasgow Airport as well as SMEs and micro businesses. DYW Glasgow provides a number of avenues for engagement for both ad hoc activities as well as longer term thematic projects in line with the city’s economic priorities. The ability for schools and industry to establish a two way request system is an excellent and invaluable tool which we encourage our stakeholders to take advantage of.

We are delighted to report that DYW Glasgow have referred 45 volunteers to us and that 18 of these volunteers have already accepted invitations from educators to meet with students.

Together Founders4Schools and DYW Glasgow have facilitated 18,560 student-employer encounters, with educators having brought business leaders into contact with 11,020 students so they are better prepared for the world of work. Below you can see a map of the schools these educators are employed by.
